Mozilla Festival 2013

Ravensbourne hosted the annual Mozilla Festival for the third year running over the weekend of 26^th and 27^th October – a bit earlier in the year than previously. Yet again, the event was a huge success – and even bigger than ever before, with over 1,400 people attending from all over the world. Ravensbourne students from the BA (Hons) Web Media course that I run were involved in three ways in particular. The first-year students covered the event from a journalistic point of view, with each group having remits to focus on a selection of related topic tracks from the event programme. We also ran a couple of sessions ourselves this year. My colleague Evan Raskob created an Arduino-powered game show with Web Media students and other attendees, whilst I presented an introductory session about Mozilla’s new HTML5 app creation tool, Appmaker (http://appmaker.mozillalabs.com/). I had around 50 people attend my presentation, who went on to build their own apps with Appmaker. Simon Wex from Mozilla even created a new component on the spot to make one of the apps work.
